Hero background
Philly Sound Exchange

Bridges is an original musical produced by Philly Sound Exchange that follows a group of high school students navigating race, identity, and belonging in todayโ€™s America. Through Philly soul, spoken word, hip-hop, gospel, and contemporary pop music, the show explores how young people build community across differences, challenge injustice, and find their voices through creative expression. Developed and performed by a diverse cast and band of emerging young artists with mentorship from professional musicians, Bridges is more than a performance โ€” itโ€™s an experience that invites students to reflect, connect, and engage in meaningful dialogue.

Bridges creates a powerful shared experience for students and staff by addressing real issues young people face today while celebrating the power of music, culture, and community.
Schools host Bridges to:
โ€ข Spark thoughtful conversations about race, identity, and belonging
โ€ข Help students explore different perspectives through storytelling
โ€ข Celebrate diverse musical traditions and cultures
โ€ข Encourage empathy, dialogue, and community building
โ€ข Inspire students to find their own creative voice

A Musical Students Connect With
Blending Philly soul, hip-hop, spoken word, gospel, and contemporary pop music, Bridges speaks the language of todayโ€™s students while honoring the rich traditions that shaped modern music.

Relevant and Student-Centered
The show was created from real experiences of young people navigating race and identity in schools today.
Interactive and Engaging
Students are encouraged to reflect on the ideas of โ€œmirrors and windowsโ€ โ€” moments where they see themselves in the story and moments where they gain insight into someone elseโ€™s experience. Students also engage with Bridges โ€œBingoโ€ cards throughout the show to help anchor the showโ€™s themes for further exploration, reflection, and conversation.

More Than a Show
Each performance includes a facilitated reflection and Q&A discussion with the cast, giving students an opportunity to process what theyโ€™ve seen and ask questions.ย  Options are available for longer workshops around songwriting, storytelling,ย  and other artistic expression to help students contribute to the next episode of the Bridges story!

Philly Sound Exchange is a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering young people through music, media, and creative collaboration. By connecting students from different communities and backgrounds, we use music as a common language to build understanding, opportunity, and connection.
